Types Of Harness For Dogs

Types of harness for dogs

When walking your pet, it is generally recommended to wear a dog harness instead of a collar. That’s because the harness holds the dog’s weight better, while the collar hurts if the dog stretches the handle.

If the dog pulls, the harness cushions the blow for both the dog and the human. There are several types of harness for dogs in pet stores, and it’s hard to know which one is right for our dog.

Therefore, we want to make a list of the most common models that can be found in stores.

What types of harness for dogs

A harness is the best option to have a peaceful walk with your dog. Whether one model is better than the other depends on the owner’s personal preference, that is, who walks the dog. The most decisive aspects when buying a new harness for your dog are usually related to ease of use and aesthetics.

To buy a new harness for your dog, you need to take into account if it is made of resistant materials – usually with nylon straps – if it has secure clasps and, especially, if the size is the right size for your dog.

“Y” harness

It is one of the most common types of harness for dogs, and that’s why they are available at any pet store. There are a wide variety of sizes, colors and prices. The harness is made up of some nylon or leather straps that wrap around the feet and chest, and which close over the back. It has a ring just below the shoulder pads for hooking the chain.

To put it on, you must insert the dog’s head through the front of the harness and join the clasps at the back. They are very easy to put on and usually you don’t need to manipulate the dog a lot to get them. If the dog suddenly starts running, the harness will hold its strength in the chest, but because it’s locked in the back, it’s controlled without hurting it.

Anti-pull or dressage harness

Anti-pull harnesses came into fashion a few years ago. They are made up of two or three nylon straps, which cross the dog’s chest horizontally and close around the body. They have a loop to hook the chain in the center of the chest, forwards; now and then, high back, from behind.

They’re called anti-pull harnesses, but putting them on doesn’t stop the dog from stretching the chain or running away. If the dog runs, what it does is deflect the power to one side of the animal, since the chain is engaged from the front. It doesn’t teach the dog not to run on its own, but it facilitates the learning process so that it doesn’t fall apart.

It is good to remember that, for dogs that tend to rush, the prolonged use of this harness can cause physical injuries, such  as muscle contractures, strains and, in extreme cases, dislocations.

Martingale anti-pull harness

This type of anti-pull harness has the same shape as the previous one, but the strap that crosses the chest has the same flexible system as martingale collars , which tighten and tighten the dog’s chest if he gives a sharp tug.

This harness causes pain and can cause  injury or bad associations on the part of the dog. Therefore, its use should be avoided, as well as martingale collars.

Julius K9

This is another of the types of harness for dogs that have come into fashion recently. Julius harnesses consist of a large padded piece that covers the dog’s back and sides, with a strap that crosses the chest vertically and closes under the belly. The chain obviously snaps into a loop in the back.

The operation is the same as that of “Y” harnesses. Also, they usually have a wing next to the ring that can be useful for dogs that need to be controlled more accurately. Their big problem is that they are usually expensive, although their big advantage is that they are easily customizable.

Three-point harness or safety harness

The three-point harnesses are very recent and have been on sale for a short time. They are specific for greyhounds or podengos, although they can be used on any dog. The appearance is the same as a “Y” harness, but it has a special strap that closes around the dog’s waist, making it impossible for him to escape.

Norwegian type harness

We can say that they are a mix of a “Y” harness with a Julius. It’s shaped like a Julius, but has nylon straps like a “Y” harness. They are quick, very easy to put on, yet they are not popular in pet shops.

So, whatever type of dog harness you choose, it’s important to make the right choice so you and your dog can enjoy the rides. Furthermore, in case of emergency or scare, you will be able to control the situation more safely. There are many colors and designs to choose from.
