Prevent a rooster from crowing: some tips!

With the help of technology,  the powerful singing of these birds so soon can bring problems  of coexistence. So, below, we’ll learn about the best  tips to prevent a rooster from crowing and disturbing the neighborhood.

For a long time, roosters were used as a natural alarm clock by mankind, especially in rural areas.

But with urbanization and technology, we can program alarms, cell phones or clocks to wake us up whenever we want.

Why do cocks crow?

Those who have lived in the countryside know very well that the rooster crow marks the beginning of a new day. For many centuries, our ancestors used this natural “talent” of these birds as a kind of alarm.

Even today, in some rural areas, we can see the spectacular image of a rooster crowing amidst the first colors of dawn; we can even remember its sound mentally.

But why do roosters crowing at the beginning of each morning? Of course, we must be sure that  roosters do not only crow at dawn,  as their crowing is not necessarily linked to that time of day.

In fact, it is  estimated that they can sing up to 15 times a day, at different times and circumstances.

Therefore, there is no single explanation as to why a rooster crows, but the specific reason will depend on each context.

In principle,  cockcrow is related to the male’s responsibility to protect his females and young.

By making this loud sound, it can communicate with other birds about changes in the environment or possible threats.

Some  recent studies have also shown that the rooster’s dawn crowing does not depend on the sun’s rays. That is, a rooster can know when to crow without the need to be guided by the sun’s rays.

Furthermore, in the countryside we can see that many roosters start crowing before sunrise.

How to prevent a rooster from crowing?

This question is as difficult as it first appears. The truth is that crowing is inherent to roosters, that is, part of their very nature.

Therefore,  silencing a rooster means repressing its innate form of expression. In addition to being virtually impossible to achieve, this is not recommended for the animal’s welfare.

Unfortunately,  some people go to the extreme of resorting to surgery to prevent a rooster from crowing.

While this may be the only concrete way to silence a rooster, it is an invasive method that removes its vocal cords.

If we want to avoid headaches and problems with neighbors, we should try to reduce the frequency and intensity of their singing. In other words, if we are unable to prevent a rooster from crowing, we will at least try to “decrease its volume”.

Below, we will see some tips to make our rooster crow less and with less intensity:

Tips to prevent a rooster from crowing

With these measures, we can alleviate some of the discomfort caused by the rooster’s crowing:

  • Provide a safe and quiet environment:  Roosters often crow to communicate changes, disturbances or threats in their habitat to other members of their community.

Therefore, if we are to prevent these emissions from being too frequent,  we must provide a calm and protected environment for our birds.

Realizing the tranquility of its surroundings, the rooster will spend more time in silence and take care of other functions.

  • Meet your needs : Like all animals, roosters and chickens have their own needs regarding their nutrition, health and well-being.

When they feel hungry or thirsty, for example, they  can sing to communicate their need to eat and hydrate themselves.

The same goes for the hygiene of your surroundings, luminosity, free space to exercise, etc.

  • Fewer cocks, less crowing : cocks also crow to show their “authority” in front of other males and to be the “alpha male”. If we have many roosters in the same yard, they are more likely to crow several times a day to reaffirm their dominance over the territory and also over the females.
  • Reduce nocturnal stimuli : at night, noises are more easily noticed and the rooster’s crowing certainly disturbs the neighbors; therefore we must avoid stimulating this bird after a certain hour.

To avoid the effect of daylight, it  is better that the rooster is not outdoors at night, but indoors, with little light and no noise.
