Home Remedies For Constipated Dogs

As with humans,  dogs are constipated and uncomfortable and in pain. This condition can occur due to a lack of fiber in your diet or not drinking enough water during the day. There are many options for treating constipation, such as some home remedies that we’ll share below.

Causes of constipation

Most dogs get constipated at some point in their lives, which, if treated in time, will pose no risk. Therefore, it is good to pay attention to the behavior of our pet and control its feces, to prevent future complications in time.

Constipation is the inability of the bowel to empty normally. If your dog seems to be trying too hard or his stools are too hard, it’s probably a case of constipation.

One of the causes of this disease in dogs is related to excessive licking of the skin, because when doing so often, animals swallow large amounts of hair, which become small balls that obstruct the colon.

In addition to diet and sedentary lifestyle, another cause of constipation can be attributed to the  consumption of foreign objects, such as stones, grass, fabrics, bones, dirt, toys or plant material.

In  adults, this condition can be triggered by a kidney problem  or by an enlarged prostate.

We suggest that  before starting any treatment or changing your pet’s diet, you consult with a veterinarian  to make sure it is not a more serious problem.

Some Home Remedies for Constipated Dogs

Pumpkin: Include it in your dog’s diet to prevent and cure constipation.  Pumpkin is made up of a lot of water and is a good source of fiber. We can give it to our dog in pureed form.

Supplements : There are natural supplements on the market that  contain additives such as acidophilus, folic acid and plant enzymes, but the best thing is to consult with your veterinarian to find out which is best for your dog.

Laxatives for constipated dogs: If your vet suggests this treatment, a mild laxative may help. Of course, we must consider the size and weight of the animal.

Enema: may be an option suggested by the veterinarian.

Milk of Magnesia to help constipated dogs: a small amount will suffice, but consult your veterinarian anyway.

Wheat and oats: We can regularly add them to our pets’ foods  and, as with pumpkin, they work to prevent constipation. Always check dosages with your veterinarian.

Aloe Ferox: This type of aloe has a beneficial effect on digestive functioning and acts as a natural system cleanser.

Exercise and clean, fresh water: to keep the digestive system working properly, our dog must get moving. Exercising regularly will help push stool through the colon.

On top of this, make sure the dog has clean, fresh water to drink at all times. Both factors can help prevent and remedy constipation.

Opt for canned food:  if your dog eat food every day, try incorporating canned food, as and ste food type is more moist and promotes the movement of the intestines.

Ginger and Chicken Broth: Prepare this home remedy  by mixing ¼ teaspoon of ginger with ½ cup of chicken or beef stock.

Olive or vegetable oil: this is a remedy that we cannot administer very often as it can trigger diarrhea. By the time your puppy is constipated, add a tablespoon of oil to his food.

Finally,  if after all these home remedies the problem persists for several days, if there is blood in the stool, if your dog is vomiting or listless, contact your veterinarian immediately as the constipation problem may be getting worse.
